What is Depression?
Everyone experiences low points from time to time. But sometimes, those lows feel different—deeper and harder to shake. The things that once brought you joy no longer seem to matter. Despite knowing that you should get moving and resume your daily routine, you find it nearly impossible. It’s as if something is weighing you down, like a dark cloud that’s overshadowing your life. You might even feel as though life isn’t worth living, wishing for the pain to end. If these feelings persist, you could be dealing with either Major or Minor Depression. That’s where depression counselling can help.
Depression is one of the most common mental health struggles people face. Each year, about 1 in 15 individuals experience major depression, and nearly 20% will experience it at some point in their lives. When you’re in the midst of depression, it can feel like there’s no way out, as if things will never improve. But sometimes, the right kind of support can make all the difference. That’s where counselling comes in.
How Can Counselling Help with Depression?
At its core, counselling is about connection. It’s about creating a safe, supportive space where you feel secure enough to open up and be honest about what you’re going through. Sometimes, simply acknowledging that you’re not feeling “okay” is a powerful first step toward healing.
When we’re able to share our fears and struggles with someone who truly listens, we can begin to find direction—moving from pain toward hope and recovery. In counselling, we work together to apply the latest psychological insights in practical, meaningful ways that can help reduce—or even resolve—your symptoms of depression.
As always, I encourage working in partnership with your family doctor. Having both a counsellor and a physician supporting you increases the chances of positive, lasting results.
